Approximately 75% Akadama and 25% Kiryu. 2 litre bucket of small-shohin grain size (1-3 mm approx.).

Akadama is a substrate that the Japanese have been using for years for the cultivation of their bonsai. As it is granulated, it allows the bonsai to drain perfectly without waterlogging, thus avoiding root rot and making the roots more aerated.

It is a neutral pH product that does not contain organic matter, but it retains the water and nutrients that we provide the plant with very well.

Although it is not essential, it is advisable to pass it through a sieve to remove the dust and prevent it from clumping, as well as to obtain different grain sizes.

Like akadama, kiryu is a granulated Japanese substrate. Because its grain is a little harder than that of akadama, it increases the durability over time of akadama when used together. The proportion of kiryu that we usually use in our mixes is between 10 and 30% of the total amount of the substrate, depending on whether we want it to be more or less draining.

Since it takes longer to decompose, it is particularly suitable for conifers, as we do not transplant them as often, but after years of using it on maples and other deciduous trees, we have found that it works equally well for these species.
