A beautiful antique author's plate with relief decoration depicting a catfish. In Japanese mythology Namazu is a giant catfish that lives in the depths and causes earthquakes when it moves. His guardian, the kami Kashima, keeps him immobilised with a sacred rock, Kaname-ishi, and when he is careless, he moves and causes the worst earthquakes.
