Bonsai pot in Bizen-Yaki namban style. It is the most identifiable type of Japanese ceramic due to its iron-like hardness, reddish-brown color, the absence of glaze (although there may be traces of molten ash resembling glaze), and the marks resulting from the wood-burning kiln fire. Bizen is named after the town of Imbe in Okayama Prefecture, formerly known as Bizen Province. This work of art is the oldest ceramic making technique in Japan, introduced in the Heian period. Bizen is one of the six traditional ovens of medieval Japan.
